Mars in Pisces: Moving With Inspiration and the Current

Mars in Pisces moves with the current rather than in a straight line: the energy of someone with this placement is less like an arrow than like a wave, sometimes strong and exuberant, sometimes calm and withdrawn. With inspiration and compassion it can achieve a great deal; the challenge is recognizing its own anger and drawing boundaries.

How does Mars in Pisces work with inspiration?

Pisces, the mutable water sign traditionally ruled by Jupiter and in modern astrology also by Neptune, softens the sharp edges of Mars. When inspiration arrives, a Pisces Mars can work with extraordinary energy. Art, music, dance, poetry, film and spiritual practice are the most natural outlets. It can work tirelessly for a cause it believes in or a person it feels compassion for. In work where it finds no meaning, though, motivation vanishes fast.

Indirect action

Direct confrontation is foreign to this placement. Rather than openly demanding what it wants, a Pisces Mars may try to get it indirectly, intuitively or with others' help. That flexibility lets it get around obstacles intuitively. But being unable to state its wishes clearly can also let others steer it.

Unclear anger

Anger struggles to take clear shape here. Not quite knowing what it feels can turn anger into sadness, fatigue or passive resistance. Escaping, sleeping or retreating into various habits can be signs of suppressed anger. Expressing feelings through writing, music or movement gives this energy a healthy outlet.

Self-sacrifice and boundaries

Helping others is how a Pisces Mars uses its energy meaningfully. Healthcare, caregiving, social work and volunteering are natural fields for this compassionate energy. Constantly setting its own needs aside, though, can lead to burnout and slipping into the victim role. Drawing boundaries is a form of courage this placement needs to learn.

Physical energy comes in waves and is easily affected by the surroundings. Fluid movement such as swimming, dance, yoga and tai chi suits it. Desire is romantic and full of fantasy; physical intimacy is lived as a spiritual union.

Saturn aspecting Mars or a Virgo emphasis gives this fluid energy direction, structure and continuity. Mars's house shows where strength that comes with inspiration is used most.
