Rising sign calculator
Your rising sign is the sign coming up over the eastern horizon at the moment you were born. It changes about every two hours, so it can't be found without your birth time.
After you fill in the form, your rising sign is shown prominently above your chart, with the full birth chart below.
If you don't know the time, check "I don't know the time"; houses and Ascendant are hidden, and the Moon's position is approximate (±6°).
What does the rising sign describe?
The ascendant is your front door: the manner you take on in new settings, the first impression you make, the style of your body and appearance. Where the Sun sign says who you are, the rising sign says how you carry it into the world.
The ascendant is also where the house system begins. As the cusp of the first house it sets which signs every other house starts in, which is why even a few minutes of difference can shift the houses.
What you get
- Your rising sign and its degree, at the top of the result.
- Where your chart ruler, the planet ruling the ascendant, sits.
- Planets in the first house; those sharing the rising sign show up in the table.
- Your full birth chart: houses, aspects, Sun and Moon sign.
Frequently asked questions
- Why do I need my birth time for the rising sign?
- As Earth turns, each sign spends about two hours rising on the eastern horizon. Two people born on the same day can have completely different rising signs if their times differ.
- How reliable is it if my time is approximate?
- If the ascendant falls mid-sign, a quarter-hour error usually doesn't change it. Near a sign boundary (the first or last few degrees) a few minutes can push it into the next sign; the degree in the result shows you which case you're in.
- What's the difference between the rising and Sun sign?
- The Sun sign depends on your birthday and changes monthly; it describes your core identity. The rising sign depends on your birth time and place; it shapes your manner, first impression and the layout of the houses.
- What if my birth time isn't on any document?
- Hospital records, family memories and photos can help. If you can't find it, the time-independent parts of your chart (Sun, planet signs, aspects) are still meaningful, and some astrologers estimate the time from life events through rectification.
