Upright

Strength upright meaning

You can meet this challenge with calm resolve rather than brute force. Strength is about taming your wilder impulses without crushing them, and governing yourself with compassion. Recognize your fear, anger or desire and guide it with a soft but steady hand; your real power lies in patience.

Reversed

Strength reversed meaning

You may be going through a period of self-doubt, with an inner voice insisting you are not enough. Reversed, Strength suggests suppressed emotions breaking out in sudden bursts, or courage that has retreated. Stop being so hard on yourself, and rebuild your confidence through small, brave steps.

Strength tarot card symbolism

Strength is card eight in the Waite–Smith deck. In the older Marseille tradition it was eleven and Justice was eight. When the Golden Dawn arranged the Major Arcana according to its astrological scheme, it swapped the two, and Waite followed that order. As a result Strength, linked to Leo, comes straight after the Chariot, linked to Cancer, just as the signs follow one another in the zodiac. Above the woman's head floats the same infinity sign that appears over the Magician: an eight lying on its side.

The image is simple. A woman in white holds a lion's jaw with a calm, gentle touch; Waite describes her as closing the lion's mouth. A garland of flowers crowns her hair and circles her waist, and the same chain of flowers loops around the lion's neck. The lion does not resist; it bows its head toward her. Behind them stretch a pale yellow sky and a distant blue mountain. There is no muscle here and no weapon. What the card shows is mastery gained not by suppressing instinct but by taming it with love. The flower chain says the bond was made by consent, not by force.

Strength upright meaning

Upright, Strength shows inner endurance, patience and the quiet form of courage. It suggests you can hold your ground in a difficult situation without shouting, without forcing, and without backing down. This is a time to learn to work with powerful feelings such as anger, fear or desire instead of fighting them. The lion is your instinct and the woman is the calm awareness that guides it; they are not enemies but parts of the same whole.

The card also reminds you that compassion is a form of power. Calming a difficult customer, setting a boundary with an angry child, slowing your breath in your own moment of panic: these are everyday faces of Strength. It can also describe a period of recovery and healing after a long struggle.

Strength reversed meaning

Reversed, Strength shows moments when the inner lion either breaks loose or is silenced altogether. At one extreme are outbursts of anger, impatience and impulsive reactions. At the other, low confidence, self-doubt and the feeling of "I can't."

Sometimes the reversed card speaks of the exhaustion that comes from trying to look strong for too long: being the one everyone leans on, never letting anyone see your weak spots. Giving yourself permission to rest and to ask for support is one way back to the card's upright meaning. You have not lost your strength; you need to settle down before you can reach it again.

Strength in love and relationships

In love Strength shows a patient, compassionate bond. Passion is present but not destructive; two people can meet each other's difficult sides with gentleness. In a new relationship it is the card of building trust step by step, without forcing it. In a long-term relationship it describes getting through a crisis, jealousy or an old hurt for instance, with understanding rather than pressure.

Reversed, power struggles, jealousy, or forgetting your own worth and constantly seeking approval may come forward. If you are single, fear of rejection may be keeping you from trying at all. Looking at your own reactions instead of trying to change the other person is a good starting point.

Strength in work and money

At work Strength shows the ability to handle difficult people or pressured conditions with good judgment. Calming a tense meeting, keeping a struggling team together, or answering criticism without getting defensive are this card's skills. It is also linked to teaching, caregiving, health care and working with animals. Success here comes from steadiness, not from noise.

With money the card suggests reining in impulsive spending and building long-term resilience: noticing the urge to shop your way out of a bad mood, setting aside small but regular savings. Reversed, be careful with financial decisions made under stress or made to prove something to someone.

Strength: astrology and element

In the Golden Dawn system Strength belongs to Leo, the element of fire and the Hebrew letter Teth, meaning "serpent." The lion on the card is the direct symbol of this attribution. Leo is a fixed fire sign ruled by the Sun, representing courage, pride, creativity and a generous heart. Teth's serpent stands for life force itself; the card teaches not to destroy that force but to give it direction.

The card shows the mature face of Leo's fire rather than its wild one. Pride becomes dignity without turning into arrogance; passion becomes creative warmth without becoming destructive. The fixed quality explains the card's endurance. People with Leo or the fifth house emphasized in the birth chart may recognize both this fire and the need to govern it.

Strength: advice

  • Before suppressing a difficult feeling, name it and stay with it for a while.
  • In an argument, try slowing down and steadying your breath instead of raising your voice.
  • Offer others the patience you offer yourself.
  • Notice the moments when you do not need to prove your strength.
