The 4th House in Astrology: Home, Family and Roots (IC)
The 4th house in astrology covers home, family, roots, a parent and the inner world. What the IC means, angular strength, how to read it, the 10th axis.
The 4th house in astrology represents a person's roots: family, the childhood home, one of the parents, the domestic environment, property, land and the deepest sense of security. It begins at the IC (Imum Coeli, "the bottom of the sky"), the lowest point of the chart. So the 4th house answers the questions "where do I come from, where do I feel I belong, and where am I safe?".
What does the 4th house represent?
Among the Latin house names the 4th is "Genitor" or "Parentes", the parent. In Hellenistic astrology it was known by a name meaning "subterranean", the hidden lower angle of the sky. Traditional astrologers read the 4th house for the father, land, inheritance and the end of life, meaning how matters finally close.
Modern astrology reads the 4th more as a psychological foundation: emotional roots, habits learned in the family, the nurturing parent and the place a person retreats to when they turn inward. Schools differ on which parent belongs to the 4th; the traditional system gives it the father, while many modern authors assign it to the parent who nurtured the child and held the household together. The most practical approach is to ask which parent sat at the emotional centre of the home.
An angular house and the IC
The 4th is one of the four angular houses. Angular houses produce concrete events, and the 4th brings visible results too: moves, buying a home, major changes in the family. Yet this angle is the most private point in the chart. If the 10th house is the face shown to the world, the 4th is the person who remains once the door is closed.
Planets close to the IC become decisive in the inner life. With the Moon in the 4th house, home, family and the past are the heart of emotional life; if home is not warm, the person struggles to feel at ease anywhere. Saturn in the 4th house can carry themes of early responsibility, a distant or worn-out parent, or having to build security on one's own; in adulthood, creating a solid home often becomes a life project. Pluto in the 4th house may describe powerful family secrets, deep transformations or issues carried down through generations. Someone with the Sun in the 4th house draws identity from family, heritage and the home they build, and often becomes more visible in the second half of life.
The Cancer analogy
Modern astrology pairs the 4th house with the fourth sign, Cancer, and its ruler the Moon. Protection, nurture, belonging and memory are the shared themes. This is an analogy; the sign on the IC in your chart gives the real tone of family and home. With the IC in Sagittarius, home may change often or the family story may span cultures; with the IC in Capricorn, family rules, duty and tradition come to the fore.
How to read the 4th house
First read the sign on the IC, then the house where that sign's ruler sits. A 4th-house ruler in the 10th brings themes such as a family business, working from home or a career that directly shapes family life. In the 9th, the person may settle abroad, or the family's belief system may shape their life profoundly. Then read the planets in the 4th and the aspects to the IC.
What does an empty 4th house mean?
An empty 4th house does not mean someone is without family or roots. It shows that this area does not keep generating drama or intense themes. The sign on the IC, the position of its ruler and the condition of the Moon paint a rich picture of family and home even when the house holds no planets.
The 4th–10th axis: roots and summit
Opposite the 4th lies the 10th house of career, status and public role. The IC and MC are two ends of the same vertical line, and the axis works like a tree: the deeper the roots, the higher the branches can reach. Tension between private and public life, the feeling of being squeezed between home and work, is the classic theme of this axis. In healthy balance, outer success rests on solid inner ground.
Transits through the 4th house
Slow planets crossing the IC often coincide with moving house, buying or selling a home, changes in family arrangements, or redefining the relationship with a parent. Jupiter's passage can bring the chance to expand the home, grow the family or move somewhere more spacious. Saturn's transit increases responsibilities around home and family, but it can also be the period in which a person lays a solid foundation of their own. These passages are not endings but a reordering of the roots.
