The 7th House in Astrology: Partnership, Marriage and the Descendant
The 7th house in astrology covers marriage, partnership, contracts and open rivals. How to read the Descendant sign, the house ruler, planets and an empty 7th.
The 7th house in astrology is the house of one-to-one relationships with "the other": marriage, long-term partnership, business partners, signed contracts and the rivals who oppose us openly. Its cusp is the Descendant (DC), the point where the Sun sets, directly opposite the Ascendant. Put simply, the 7th house shows in whose mirror a person comes to know themselves, and how they negotiate with that mirror.
What does the 7th house represent?
Traditional astrology calls this the house of marriage, while Hellenistic sources named it the "setting place". The spouse or partner, the business associate, the other side in a legal dispute, a consultant's client, even the neighbour we keep arguing with all belong here. The common thread is a relationship between two equal parties: not family and not friendship, but a bond that is chosen and usually defined by a promise or a signature.
Modern astrology also reads the 7th as a field of projection. Qualities a person does not recognise in themselves turn up in others, either magnetic or maddening. Someone who says they always end up with "controlling" partners is often carrying their own need for control out through this house.
The Descendant as an angular house
The 7th is one of the angular houses; together with the 1st, 4th and 10th it forms the four corners of the chart. Planets in angular houses are strong, visible and inclined to turn into events. For someone with planets in the 7th, relationships are lived at the centre of life rather than on its edges.
Its natural sign is Libra and its natural ruler is Venus. That pairing is a modern teaching aid: Libra's search for balance, courtesy and fairness suits the 7th well, but the real colour of the house in your chart comes from whichever sign sits on its cusp.
The 1st–7th house axis
The 1st house says "I"; the 7th says "you". The axis describes the swing between independence and togetherness. A person with a strong Ascendant and a crowded 7th may fear losing themselves in a relationship; the reverse can produce someone who hands every decision to a partner for approval. A healthy axis means being able to bond while remaining oneself.
How to read the 7th house in a birth chart
Start with the sign on the Descendant. An Aries Descendant is drawn to direct, competitive, brave partners; a Taurus Descendant prizes loyalty and material security; an Aquarius Descendant looks for space and friendship inside the relationship.
Next comes the house ruler. Wherever the ruler of the 7th falls, relationships connect to that area of life: in the 10th, meeting a partner through work or building a career together is common; in the 9th, the spouse may come from another culture or a distant city.
Then look at the planets inside. Venus in the 7th house brings harmony and charm, along with a habit of dodging conflict. Saturn in the 7th house points to serious, later or age-gap unions and commitments that grow stronger with time. Mars in the 7th house seats passion and argument at the same table, while Jupiter in the 7th house describes generous partnerships that widen the horizon.
A worked example: Cancer rising, Capricorn on the Descendant
Take a woman with Cancer rising. Her Descendant is Capricorn and the ruler of her 7th is Saturn. If Saturn sits in her 10th house, it is no surprise that she is drawn to partners who are older, established in their careers, slow to show feeling but reliable about their word. She herself is warm, protective and emotional; across the chart she looks for structure, limits and responsibility.
None of this says the relationship will be cold. It shows that she seeks in a partner the maturity and resolve she has not yet fully claimed for herself. As she learns to set her own boundaries and take her own ambitions seriously, the weight in the relationship evens out. The same house describes business partnerships too: when she starts her own company, she benefits from a disciplined, rule-minded associate who thinks long term. The 7th reads love and contracts by the same logic: the person opposite carries the piece we have not yet owned.
What does an empty 7th house mean?
A 7th house with no planets does not mean someone will never marry or that relationships are unimportant. It simply means the relationship story is told through the Descendant sign and its ruler rather than through planets in the house. Plenty of people with an empty 7th enjoy long, fulfilling marriages; the theme may just feel less dramatic, less like fate.
Transits through the 7th house
Jupiter crossing the 7th can bring new partnerships, engagements, agreements and a favourable wind in legal matters. Saturn tests relationships: bonds that carry no real weight get questioned, solid ones become formal. A Uranus transit tends to arrive as unexpected meetings or a need for more freedom within a partnership. These periods are not verdicts; they show what in one's relationships is ready to mature.
