Year Spread: how this tarot reading works
The year spread arranges twelve months in a circle and places the overall theme of the year in the middle. One card is drawn for each month, so you can see at a glance the energy of the year ahead, the periods that will stand out and the main lesson running through it all. It is the yearly tarot spread people turn to at New Year, on their birthday or when a new chapter begins.
Tips for interpreting
- Read the theme card in the middle first; treat the month cards as different facets of that theme.
- Months where cards of the same suit cluster show which area of life (emotions, work, thought, material matters) will stand out in that part of the year.
- Save the reading and come back to each month’s card at the start of that month; its meaning unfolds over time.

Frequently asked questions
When is the best time to do a year tarot spread?
Traditionally it is done at the start of a cycle, such as New Year, your birthday or your solar return; but you can lay it out for the twelve months ahead whenever you like.
Does the first card stand for January?
In this spread the positions are named after the calendar months (1 = January … 12 = December); if you do the reading mid-year, you can think of the months ahead in that order.
